I believe that this is a great website although I recently "discovered" it. I actually live in Westlake and 7th so I know this area like the palm of my hand. However, a simple idea I had would be to work with teens like myself, and try to involve them in your website. This would really raise awareness within the community and maybe teens can even speak of the problems and benefits of the Westlake area.

Latinos have been in Kansas for a long time. My husband's family hails from Arkansas City and Wichita, and we attended a Hernandez family reunion in Wichita several years ago. His grandparents left Mexico when Pancho Villa was around, and both of his grandfathers worked on the railroads. His parents faced lots of discrimination, and weren't allowed to swim in the public swimming pool, drink from the Whites Only drinking fountains or attend college.

Growing up in a suburb a few towns - and skin tones and socioeconomic layers - over from Detroit, it is hard to reconcile the nightly-news-fueled paranoia of my mother ("you're going to get killed!!") with the overcompensatory, 'not-racist' posturing of my friends ("people totally act like they're going to get killed").

In the end, both are things said only by Babes in the Woods.

A brave and thoughtful article, with refreshing candor about the ambivalence some of us feel when we know we are out of place but don't want to feel like we are prejudiced either.

Devin and Carmen,

What a powerful article. I work in the neighborhood you write about but I never considered living there- I guess its easy to turn it off and drive back to WeHo before dusk, which has been my routine for years.
What brave pieces of writing! Thank you!
